In the anime Observation Diary of My Self-Declared Villainous Fiancee, romance and comedy are built around the heroine who suddenly decides that she is the villainess of history and begins to act as if she is bound to ruin the fate of everyone around her. The problem is that she does it too sweetly and unconvincingly, and the groom, instead of being horrified, begins to watch her, record her antics and gradually fall more and more in love with this strange honesty. The series plays on a parody of the villainess genre and turns expectations upside down: instead of cruel intrigues, the heroine makes ridiculous plans that more often help people than harm them, and those around her do not understand how to react to her theatrical monologues. At the same time, behind the humor hides a touching theme of self-esteem; the heroine is afraid that they won’t really love her, so she chooses the mask of a villain, as if it’s easier to control the situation. The groom learns to support her gently, without breaking the game, but helping her accept herself. This is a light and very warm anime about how love sees a person deeper than a role, and how sometimes the best way to defeat fate is to laugh at it together.
